What's self-advocacy

Webster’s Dictionary defines advocacy it as arguing or pleading for a cause. With self-advocacy, the cause is you! You have the power and the voice to change your own life.

Self-advocacy is more complicated for foster youth—it’s tough to undo the messages you’ve received. You might not feel confident standing up for yourself or asking for what you want or need. But by taking small steps it is possible to become an advocate for yourself.

What are some examples of self–advocacy?

> Telling a judge what you want

> Asking a lawyer for help

> Asking your caseworker to do something for you

> Discussing your goals/plans with your foster parents

> Telling someone that you are being abused

> Getting teachers to write you recommendations for college applications

> Filing a complaint when you are unfairly treated at work
